Biodiversity in Mozambique

Due to its extension and location along the coast and downstream of important river basins, Mozambique has a diversity of biophysical conditions that include a terrestrial, marine and aquatic biodiversity that is unrivalled in the southern African region and in the world, covering around 14 ecoregions, which together harbour a biodiversity estimated at more than 6,000 floristic species and 4,000 faunal species.

Several iconic species of tourist importance from both the terrestrial environment (elephant, lion, giraffe, hippopotamus, leopard, wild dog and buffalo) and the marine environment (manta ray, sharks, turtles, whales, dolphins and dugong) can be seen in Mozambique.
